Hibernation is a feature supported by windows xp.Hibernating the system can save power for you.The system can be put to hibernating mode with user programs opened which is not possible in the case of shut down.By putting the system to hibernation the contents of the ram are written to the hard disk.By switching on the processor the state of the system as can be resumed with all the programs opened by the user remaining the same before hibernation.
To put the system in hibernation, hibernate feature has to be turned on. This can be done enabling hibernate option(select hibernate tab) in the power option properties window.
To go to that window (right click in desktop->properties->screen saver tab->power button).
Also standby feature can be used to save enormous power. The system just shuts off the power to monitor, hard disk and other devices, maintains power to the RAM alone.
Just follow steps to shut down system(windows xp).pointing the cursor to standby icon press the 'shift' button to see the icon changing to 'hibernate'..
